Enugu-Port Harcourt Highway Corridor Roads, Isiala-Ngwa South

The Enugu-Port Harcourt Highway is one of the busiest corridors in South-East Nigeria, carrying freight, commercial traffic and daily commuters between the two cities. In Isiala-Ngwa South, the communities strung along it - Amaorji, Osusu, Obiakabia and Ngwa Ukwu II - depended on link roads that had degraded into bare laterite: choking with dust in the dry season, barely passable in the rains, and a daily cost to the traders, farmers and families who rely on them.

Pumeco Industries Nigeria Limited was engaged by the Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Works, to construct and rehabilitate the roads along this corridor to a durable, all-weather standard.

Scope of Works

  • Site clearing, earthworks and formation of the road subgrade
  • Laying and compaction of the crushed-stone base course
  • Asphalt wearing course, laid with Pumeco's own paver and support plant
  • Construction of kerbs, junction islands and edge protection
  • Road marking and kerb painting for night-time visibility and safety
  • Pavement core sampling and quality testing of the completed asphalt

Building the Road

By April 2026 works were in full progress along the corridor. Pumeco deployed its own plant to site - including the company's asphalt paver and wheel loader - placing and compacting the stone base before the asphalt wearing course was laid.

Working through laterite terrain and the palm belt that flanks the highway, the crews built the road up in engineered layers rather than simply patching the surface. That distinction matters: a road built in proper layers carries heavy traffic through the wet season, while a surface patch fails under the first serious rains.

Finishing and Road Safety

By the end of June 2026 the carriageway was complete and finishing works were underway. Junctions and turning heads were formed with concrete islands and kerbing; kerbs were painted in black-and-white banding for night-time visibility; and the full run of centre lines, edge lines and junction tapers was applied across the network. A branded Pumeco marker was set at the main junction island.

Proving the Work: Quality Assurance

Completion was not the end of the job. In July 2026 Pumeco's engineers returned to the finished road to take pavement core samples - drilling cores directly out of the new asphalt, in full personal protective equipment, and recording the results on site.

Core sampling verifies that the layer thicknesses and compaction actually achieved on the ground match what was specified. It is the difference between a road that is merely signed off and a road that is demonstrably proven.

Outcome

The communities of Amaorji, Osusu, Obiakabia and Ngwa Ukwu II now have a properly engineered, all-weather road network connecting them to the Enugu-Port Harcourt Highway - safer for pedestrians and cyclists, passable through the rains, and built to a standard confirmed by testing rather than assumed.
